Australia Witnesses Demonstrations Over Isaac Herzog’s Visit

(MENAFN) Large-scale demonstrations persisted across Australia for a fourth consecutive day on Thursday in response to Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s visit. According to reports from local outlets, hundreds assembled in Melbourne after his arrival in the city ahead of the final stage of his tour.

In Melbourne, the rally commenced outside Flinders Street Station, where significant numbers of demonstrators gathered holding placards asserting that Herzog was not welcome in the city, a news agency reported.

Several participants shared deeply personal accounts during the protest. One woman explained that she attended the rally seeking accountability for relatives who had been killed amid the conflict. Another protester emphasized her intention to convey a clear message to the government expressing opposition to Herzog’s trip.

The gathering came after previous demonstrations were staged outside two of Herzog’s official appearances, even though specifics of his Melbourne schedule had not been disclosed in advance.

Herzog’s journey to Australia has sparked extensive protests in multiple major urban centers, including Sydney. Earlier rallies there resulted in confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers.

On Wednesday, hundreds more assembled outside Australia’s Parliament House to voice their disapproval of Herzog's visit.

Since Herzog arrived on Monday for a four-day stay, protests have unfolded nationwide, with tensions intensifying following earlier altercations between police and activists.

Thousands poured into the streets at the beginning of the week, prompting clashes with authorities in several areas. Videos widely shared across social media platforms depicted New South Wales (NSW) police forcefully removing Muslim worshippers and dragging them while they were engaged in prayers during the demonstration.
