Pentagon Urges Japan, Australia to Define Stances on Taiwan Conflict
China considers Taiwan a part of its territory based on the One-China principle and insists on eventual reunification.
Although the US officially recognizes Chinese sovereignty over the self-governing island, it continues to provide Taipei with arms.
According to the news agency, US Under Secretary of Defense Elbridge Colby has been urging Japanese and Australian military leaders for several months to get ready for a possible conflict, citing anonymous sources.
“Concrete operational planning and exercises that have direct application to a Taiwan contingency are moving forward with Japan and Australia,” one source told the news agency.
“But this request caught Tokyo and Canberra by surprise because the US itself does not give a blank check guarantee to Taiwan.”
