PM: Australia Opposes “Any Unilateral Action” on Taiwan
Speaking to reporters in Shanghai, Albanese declared, “We have a clear position, and we have been consistent about that…We don't want any change in the status quo,” as reported by a news agency.
His remarks followed a media report revealing that Washington has requested Japan and Australia to specify their potential involvement in a US-China confrontation over Taiwan—a request that has reportedly caused frustration for both nations.
Albanese’s arrival in Shanghai on Saturday marks the beginning of a weeklong diplomatic visit to China. This is his second official trip as prime minister since his initial visit in 2023.
Adding to the government’s stance, Acting Defense Minister Patrick Conroy highlighted Australia's independent decision-making in such critical issues.
“The sole power to commit Australia to war, or to allow our territory to be used for a conflict, is the elected government of the day,” Conroy said. “Sovereignty will always be prioritized, and that will continue to be our position.”
During discussions with Chen Jining, secretary of the Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, Albanese stressed the importance of maintaining strong bilateral relations.
“We deal with each other in a calm and consistent manner, and we want to continue to pursue our national interests, and it is in our interest to have good relations with China,” he remarked.
He further added, “My visit here will enable us to have further frank and constructive dialogue, which is so important for relations between our two countries and to promote stability and prosperity in our region.”
Albanese is scheduled to participate in the Annual Leaders’ Meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang and hold talks with President Xi Jinping during his stay.
