Pentagon urges Japan, Australia to clarify stance on Taiwan’s conflict
Citing unnamed sources, a news agency claimed that the Pentagon has been quietly pressuring both nations to engage in more specific operational planning and military exercises aimed at preparing for a potential Taiwan-related conflict.
“Concrete operational planning and exercises that have direct application to a Taiwan contingency are moving forward with Japan and Australia,” the outlet quoted one source as saying. “But this request caught Tokyo and Canberra by surprise because the US itself does not give a blank check guarantee to Taiwan.”
Under the One-China principle, Beijing views Taiwan as an integral part of its territory and is determined to pursue reunification. While the US acknowledges China’s sovereignty over the island in official policy, it continues to supply weapons to Taipei and maintain unofficial relations, which China views as a provocation.
According to the report, US Under Secretary of Defense Elbridge Colby has been spearheading efforts to push Japanese and Australian defense officials toward more concrete contingency planning for a potential Taiwan crisis.
